Challenge

AgriFutures Australia sought to identify new revenue opportunities across its diverse portfolio of rural industries. With 13 levied industries and 15 emerging industries ranging from chicken meat and rice to industrial hemp, seaweed, and native grains, the organisation needed a comprehensive understanding of each sector’s current circumstances, challenges, and potential for innovation, growth, and profit maximisation.

Approach

CIS undertook this study by combining:

• Stakeholder engagement: Conducting more than 130 interviews with peak industry bodies, businesses, supply chain participants and researchers to understand each industry’s current situation and circumstances and to explore revenue opportunities across the value chains of the emerging industries.

• Desktop research: Reviewing Research Development and Extension (RD&E) Plans and broader national and global literature.

Outcome

The study delivered actionable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities facing AgriFutures’ industries, equipping the organisation with a strategic foundation to pursue innovation and revenue growth. CIS’s work contributed to AgriFutures’ broader portfolio of strategic reports and studies for Research and Development Corporations, including investment plans, economic impact analyses, and sector-specific RD&E strategies.
