Challenge
Mental health clinical trials in Australia had historically been small-scale, limiting their ability to deliver definitive evidence and reach diverse communities. Deakin University sought to establish a nationwide clinical trial network - MAGNET - to drive better prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery in adult mental health. Coordinating over 100 representatives from institutions, health services, industry bodies, and consumer groups required a robust bid that addressed governance, lived-experience integration, and long-term sustainability.
Approach
CIS was engaged to project manage and support Deakin University’s application to the MRFF Million Minds Mission – 2020 Mental Health Research grant. Working closely with lead Chief Investigator Professor Michael Berk, CIS provided support for the:
Development of the governance model and term sheet.
Design of a lived-experience strategy to ensure inclusivity and relevance.
Budget preparation and bid writing.
Partner engagement support.
This comprehensive support ensured the bid met all requirements and reflected the collaborative vision of MAGNET.
Outcome
In 2021, Deakin University was awarded $12 million from the MRFF to establish MAGNET in collaboration with partners. Today, MAGNET facilitates a cooperative and inclusive adult mental health clinical trial network, sharing resources via central ‘platforms’ and conducting large-scale trials across diverse disorders and therapies.
