Challenge

The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, New Zealand’s leading independent immunology research centre, sought to ensure the long-term sustainability of its Hugh Green Cytometry Centre, funded by the Hugh Green Foundation. The challenge was to design a business model that could balance financial viability with scientific excellence, while providing a clear roadmap for growth and expansion.

Approach

CIS was subcontracted via Squizzical in 2023 to develop a sustainable business model and plan. Our role included:

• Designing multiple business and financial model options.

• Presenting these options to Malaghan Institute and Hugh Green Foundation executives for review and feedback

• Refining the models based on stakeholder feedback.

• Providing evidence-based recommendations to support sustainability and long-term growth.

Outcomes

The final report, incorporating all recommendations, was endorsed by both the Institute and the Hugh Green Foundation. The Malaghan Institute is now implementing the approved strategy, positioning the Hugh Green Cytometry Centre for sustainable operations and future expansion, ensuring it continues to support cutting-edge immunology research.
