Challenge
Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) sought major national funding to establish a coordinated genomics initiative that could unify Australia's fragmented diagnostic and research landscape. At the time, genomic testing varied widely across states, access was inequitable, and there was no national mechanism to link cutting-edge research with clinical practice. Coordinating a consortium spanning hospitals, laboratories, universities and consumer groups required a clear governance model and a complleing case for investment.
Approach
CIS supported MCRI to develop its application to the NHMRC Targeted Call for Research in Genomics, coordinating contributions from around 50 Chief Investigators and partner organisations nationwide. CIS helped shape the narrative, ensuring the proposal demonstrated both feasiblity and transformative potential.
Outcome
The bid secured $25 million to establish the Australian Genomics Health Alliance, which went on to become the national backbone for genomic medicine. Over ten years it grew to 32 clinical sites and more than 100 partner organisations, enabling genomic testing for over 5,000 patients and delivering landmark national programs such as Mackenzie’s Mission and Acute Care Genomics. The initiative generated the evidence that shaped national policy, pioneered ultra‑rapid genomic testing, and built enduring infrastructure including shared data platforms, consent tools and clinical guidelines. Australian Genomics also became a respected international collaborator, helping set global standards in genomic data and practice, and its legacy now underpins the establishment of Genomics Australia.
