Challenge
Australia needed a national initiative to accelerate the transition to a reliable, affordable, and clean energy future. The University of Technology Sydney led this Round 21 CRC application for the RACE for 2030 CRC, but sought support for the complex application process, which included engaging and coordinating 72 partners, securing large-scale funding, and demonstrating long-term impact in a highly competitive environment.
Approach
CIS acted as interim CEO and bid manager, providing end-to-end support across all phases of the CRC application.
Stage 1: Defined the central concept and research program; facilitated industry workshops; negotiated commercial terms with 72 partners; developed a high-level budget; conducted a preliminary impact assessment; and prepared detailed responses to selection criteria.
Stage 2: Built the full business case; refined governance structures; developed detailed financial models and milestones; and conducted complex economic modelling.
Interview: Delivered strategic advice; guided mock interviews; and refined the presentation for the selection panel.
Outcome
The bid succeeded as one of four winning CRCs in Round 21, securing $68.5 million in Commonwealth funding and $279 million in partner contributions, making it the largest CRC ever funded. The ten-year CRC was launched in 2020 and continues to stive towards its impact pathway with industry-focused research projects.
