Challenge

Following the award of $53 million in Commonwealth funding, the Critical Metals for Critical Industries CRC (CMCI CRC) needed to transition rapidly from a successful bid into a new $240 million collaborative research organisation involving more than 60 partners and third parties. Establishment required translating the commitments developed during the bid into practical arrangements for the CRC’s first year of operation. This included securing agreements across a large and diverse partner network, progressing the first portfolio of research projects, and developing a detailed Year 1 budget aligned with planned activities, appointments and projects.

Approach

Having supported the CMCI CRC throughout Stage 1, Stage 2 and interview, CIS brought continuity and detailed knowledge of the consortium, research program, partner commitments and financial model into the establishment phase.

Working alongside the CMCI CRC leadership team, Mining3 and the Rozetta Institute, CIS provided hands-on management and coordination focused on three critical areas of establishment: Partner Agreements, Milestones, and the detailed Year 1 budget.

CIS mobilised a multidisciplinary team combining CRC establishment, partner engagement, project coordination and financial modelling expertise to progress these activities within the tight establishment timeframe.

Outcome

CIS supported the CMCI CRC to move from a successful funding application towards operational readiness, providing the coordination and financial foundations needed to commence its ten-year research program. The establishment process converted commitments made during the bid into legally-binding Partner Agreements, initial projects and detailed financial arrangements required for delivery.

This work demonstrates CIS’ ability to support major collaborative research initiatives beyond the funding decision — bridging the gap between a successful bid and an operational organisation.
